Ambitions for European integration:

Romania, Moldova and Ukraine between East and West

Trip description

This trip aims to explore the process of integration or otherwise of three former Communist East European countries: Romania, Moldova and Ukraine. Through meetings with officials, universities, NGOs and journalists we will examine the economic, social and political issues raised by the fall of the Soviet Union two decades ago and the transition from communism to liberal capitalism. Specific issues to be explored include the countries’ relationship to the EU, NATO and Russia; the aftermath of the Orange Revolution in Ukraine; the status of Transnistria; problems of corruption, human trafficking and press freedom; the impact of the global financial crisis on the region; and the status of national minorities like the Roma people.

Finance

Total expected expenditure: £450 per person. Travel and accommodation is estimated to consume £350 per person, and we expect each person to spend about £100 on various expenses. Efforts are being made to find cheaper transport solutions.
