‘An exploration of the relationships between international media and development groups – Do they frustrate or facilitate each others’ agendas in world politics?’
Speaker Info: An experienced speaker on the International Media, and Aid and Development, Barry Langridge presents a challenging, lively and amusing session on these two huge areas of international discussion.
Barry has worked at various levels for the BBC, majoring in the BBC World Service. At others stages of his career Barry worked for Christian Aid. He ended up as a Board Member for both organisations, simultaneously - the only person ever to do so.
At BBC World Service Barry served as Regional Head for Africa and the Middle East, and then as Head of Region for Asia and the Pacific. Again, the only person who has run both of World Service's largest Regions, with the largest audiences and the largest number of staff - all international.
At Christian Aid Barry was Project Officer for India and Bangladesh, then took two years off to work in Southern India on a development project, and then rose to the Board of Christian Aid.
Barry has sat at on the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) at various times, sometimes for the BBC, other times for Christian Aid.
At Bush House he worked with and managed staff from and in around 40 countries, most of them developing. Here managing versions of neutrality, balance and fairness were day-to-day fundamentals and handling aggressive lobby-groups a weekly event.
Barry was awarded an MBE for broadcasting two years ago.
