Breaking the Mould of Neglect: Latin American Transcendence

US Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference April 7-11, 2008 (4th week of Easter Break)

Latin America's importance cannot be overstated as the world continues to become more centralized and interdependent. Latin America's diversity of political and social structures transcends the region and touches each corner of the globe.

Students will engage in lively discussions, hear renowned experts on the issues, and share their own personal views on world events. Delegates are placed in specific roundtables that include topics such as, the Rise of Populism in Latin America: A Tale of Two Lefts, Transnational Crime Networks, Implications of China’s Growing Influence in Latin America, etc. Delegates are expected to write a final paper (traditionally 3000 words), based on their specific roundtable topic, to be entered into a contest to determine the outstanding paper of NAFAC 2008.

Students prepare for the conference by keeping abreast of current events through newspapers, periodicals, and the news. Background research into the particular topics' literature is essential to writing a good and well balanced paper.

There will also be opportunities for tours of the Naval Academy campus, sailing on the school's yachts, rock climbing, ropes courses, and other fun activities. Application Open to all LSE students
